How to Change the Thermostat in a 1995 Subaru Legacy
- 1). Park your 1995 Subaru Legacy on a level surface.
- 2). Open the hood to expose the vehicle's engine compartment.
- 3). Disconnect the negative battery terminal. To do this, place a small socket on the nut located on the battery terminal and turn it counterclockwise to loosen the cable. Then you should be able to slide it off of the battery terminal.
- 4). Place a bucket under the radiator, directly behind the cooling fan. Pull the drain plug located on the bottom of the radiator to drain the coolant from the cooling system.
- 5). Use your 3/8-inch-drive socket to turn the thermostat housing bolts counterclockwise.
- 6). Remove the thermostat housing from the intake manifold and remove the old thermostat from the housing.
- 7). Install the new thermostat into the thermostat housing and replace on the intake manifold.
- 8). Turn the thermostat housing bolts clockwise to secure the housing to the intake manifold.
- 9). Fill the radiator with new coolant but do not replace the radiator cap at this point.

Reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal. Secure the battery cable by turning the nut clockwise to tighten it. - 11
Run the engine until the thermostat opens. This will test the new thermostat and allow the radiator to expel any air that is present in the cooling lines.
