How to Replace the Belt on a Nissan Quest
- 1). Raise the hood and secure it with the locking rod attachment so that it does not fall.
- 2). Locate the belt that needs changing. The top belt is attached by an adjustable idler pulley that is located on the top center of the engine. Loosen the bolt in the middle of the idler pulley with the ratchet and socket. Turn the bolt counter clockwise to loosen. Then, locate the adjustable bolt at the top of the idler pulley. Turn the adjustable bolt counter clockwise with the ratchet and socket to loosen the belt. Then, pull the belt out of all of the accessory pulleys. Pull the belt around the fan blades and out of the engine compartment.
- 3). Match the old belt to the new belt to make sure that the new belt is the proper size. Then, slide the new belt around the fan blades and around the top pulleys. Tighten the belt by turning the adjustable bolt clockwise with the ratchet and socket. Once the belt is tight, push inward on the belt with your hand to check the tension of the belt, which should have no more than about one-half inch of slack. If the belt is too loose or too tight, adjust accordingly. Then, tighten the middle idler pulley back down tight with the ratchet and socket.
