Directions for Replacing the Speed Sensor in a 1991 Honda Accord
- 1). Open the driver’s door and apply the emergency brake on the Accord. Raise the hood and then remove the black, or negative, cable from the battery with a socket wrench.
- 2). Loosen the lug nuts on both of the front tires slightly with a lug wrench. Don’t remove them, just loosen them one-quarter of a turn counterclockwise.
- 3). Raise the front end of the Accord with a hydraulic jack and then place a jack stand under the frame rail on both sides of the car. Both jack stands should be set at equal heights and placed behind the front tire on each side.
- 4). Lower the hydraulic jack very slowly until the car rests completely on the support arms of the jack stands and then remove the hydraulic jack.
- 5). Remove the lug nuts from the driver’s-side tire and then slide the tire off the lug studs.
- 6). Locate the wheel speed sensor on the opposite side of the brake caliper, at the rear of the hub assembly. It will have wires connected to it that are held in place by bolts.
- 7). Follow the wire connected to the speed sensor away from it and up the strut tower until you reach its wiring harness plug. Unplug the wiring harness plug by hand. Do not use any tools.
- 8). Remove the two mounting bolts holding the speed sensor in place and then pull the speed sensor out of its housing.
- 9). Remove the five bolts from the retaining clips holding the speed sensor's wire and remove the sensor from your Accord.
- 10
Install the new wheel speed sensor just as you removed the old one. - 11
Tighten the five bolts that hold the speed sensor’s wire to seven ft-lbs. with a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench. Reset the torque wrench to 16 ft-lbs. and then tighten the two sensor mounting bolts. - 12
Repeat this process to replace the front passenger-side wheel speed sensor as well as both rear sensors. Before you raise the rear of the Accord, place a wheel block in front of both of the front tires.
