How to Install Rear Brakes on a 2002 Dodge Dakota
- 1). Put on the emergency brake on the truck and make sure it is parked on a flat and level surface.
- 2). Use a ratchet and socket to disconnect the negative terminal cable from the battery.
- 3). Use a turkey baster to drain two-thirds of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
- 4). Use the tire tool's lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts of the rear tires.
- 5). Raise the rear of the truck with a jack, place jack stands beneath the frame rails on either side and slowly lower the jack until the truck rests upon the stands.
- 6). Use a tie tool to remove the lug nuts of the rear wheels, then remove the wheels.
- 7). Use a ratchet and socket to unbolt the two primary caliper mounting bolts, located on the top and bottom of one side of the caliper.
- 8). Slide the caliper up and off the brake rotor with your hands.
- 9). Remove the brake pads from the caliper with your hands.
- 10
Retract the caliper piston using a C-clamp. Be sure to use one of the old brake pads between the C-clamp and the bottom of the piston for protection. - 11
Insert the new brake pad and release the C-clamp from the piston. - 12
Reinstall the caliper on the brake rotor. Set the tension between 25 and 28 foot pounds of pressure. - 13
Reattach the wheel, remove the jack stands and lower the tuck with the jack. - 14
Refill the master cylinder with brake fluid and reconnect the negative terminal to the battery. - 15
Start the truck and pump the brake several times to allow the brake pads to settle in place.
