Removing Honeywell Thermostats From the Walls
- 1). Turn off the electrical power to the furnace at the main house panel.
- 2). Remove the outer ring of the thermostat. Grasp the outer cover on either side with both hands and pull it toward you, applying equal pressure on both sides. The ring-shaped cover is snapped into place and comes off without difficulty.
- 3). Remove the two mounting screws using the appropriate screwdriver.
- 4). Pull the thermostat out from the wall as far as the wiring will allow.
- 5). Test the thermostat wires at their terminal connections using a voltage tester. Place one of the two tester probe tips on the thermostat terminal marked “R” and the other on the terminal marked “W.” A reading of “zero” verifies the absence of power.
- 6). Wrap a small strip of masking tape around each of the two wires. Identify each wire with its respective thermostat terminal using a marker. For example, mark the wire attached to the “R” terminal with an R and to the “W” terminal with a W.
- 7). Loosen the screws on the R and W thermostat terminals and remove the wires.
- 8). Bend the wires into a loop to prevent them from falling through the hole into the wall cavity.
