How to Build an OBD2 Code Reader

    • 1). Install the car reading software onto your laptop computer -- unless you have a desktop computer in your garage. Insert the software installation CD into the disc drive of your computer, then follow the installation prompts once the installation wizard loads onto the screen. This software is provided with the OBD2 to USB adapter you purchase.

    • 2). Insert the OBD2 end of the cable into the OBD2 port. This port is roughly two inches long and half an inch thick. It is commonly found directly under your computer's steering wheel.

    • 3). Plug the USB end of the cable into a USB port on your computer. Launch the installed program and it automatically begins to read all the coding and functionality of your car's computer system.
