How to Change a Drive Chain on an ATV
- 1). Pull the ATV to an open, accessible area and stand the rear of the ATV on a stand or a block. Make sure that the rear tires can spin freely, and make sure that the ATV is secure and wont fall easily.
- 2). Use a crescent wrench to loosen the lug bolt on the rear axle. Loosen it about 5 or 6 full turns to allow the tightening assembly to slide.
- 3). Loosen the chain tightening bolts on both sides of the swingarm to allow the chain to become very loose.
- 4). Turn one of the rear tires, allowing the chain to slide around its route, until you locate the master link. This link will have a clip on it, and will look different than all the other links in the chain.
- 5). Remove the clip on the master link by prying it apart using a flathead screwdriver. Then, pull apart the master link, and pull the chain away from the ATV.
- 6). Slide the new chain onto the rear sprocket and then onto the front sprocket. Then, pull it back around to itself and connect it with its included master link. Place the master link clip on the top of the master link.
- 7). Adjust the chain to your desired tightness using the chain tightening bolts on both sides of the swingarm. Make sure that both tightening bolts match up evenly. Then, retighten the lug bolt, once again using a crescent wrench.
