How to Replace Pontoon Trailer Carpet

    • 1). Measure the length and width of your bunk boards to determine how much replacement carpet you need. Standard carpet comes in 8-inch by 12-foot rolls or 12-inch by 12-foot rolls. The carpet will need to cover the bunk boards and tuck underneath. The key when measuring is that you are allowing for one continuous piece, and no seams. Example: If your board is 9 inches wide by 10 feet long, you will need to order two 12-inch by 12-foot rolls.

    • 2). Unbolt existing bunk boards, stripping them of old carpet remnants or strips. Examine them to ensure they still are sturdy, and not warped. If they show any damage, you may need to replace with new boards, which are inexpensive and can be made out of pressure treated wood.

    • 3). Measure and cut weather-resistant polypropylene marine carpet material to fit one board at a time. Spray board thoroughly with 3M spray adhesive or high grade glue. Mark any bolt holes with your marker. Leave excess carpet hanging evenly over each side.

    • 4). Flip boards onto their backs. Fold and use staple gun to staple the excess carpet with stainless steel staples onto the bottom of the boards. A "gift wrapping" motion works best. Trim with scissors, discarding excess or overlapping pieces. Some choose to spray the frayed edges with 3M adhesive to avoid unraveling.

    • 5). Flip boards back into their original position. Use your drill to put a starter hole through the carpet where the marker indicates the bolt holes are.

    • 6). Optional: Apply Liquid Rollers Bunk Spray Coating onto the carpet for a slippery protective finish which will help your boat slide better. Follow drying-time instructions.

    • 7). Reattach bolts and bunk boards onto the trailer.
