How to Replace the Brakes in a 1995 Pontiac
- 1). Park the vehicle on a solid, level surface.
- 2). Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels where you are going to change the brakes, using the tire iron. Typically the front brakes wear out before the rear brakes. If you are changing the brakes on one side of the vehicle, the brakes on the other side must also be changed.
- 3). Raise the vehicle with the floor jack high enough for the jack stands to fit under the frame. You only need to lift that portion of the vehicle where the brakes are going to be changed, so both the front and rear do not necessarily need to be placed on jack stands.
- 4). Remove the lug nuts and the tires for each applicable wheel.
- 1). Remove the bolts holding the disc brake assembly in place using the wrench and socket set.
- 2). Pry off the brake assembly, using the screwdriver between the assembly and the brake rotor.
- 3). Remove the old brake pads from the brake assembly and replace them with the new brake pads.
- 4). Slide the brake assembly back over the brake rotor.
- 5). Insert the bolts and tighten them as much as possible, using the wrench and socket set.
- 1). Repeat the procedure for replacing the brakes for each worn brake.
- 2). Place the tires back on the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
- 3). Jack up the vehicle and remove the floor stands.
- 4). Lower the vehicle to the ground.
- 5). Tighten all of the lug nuts on the tires that were removed, using the tire iron.
