Planning a Bike Ride From Canada to Mexico - Which Charity Should I Choose?
Well retirement can get a little boring at 40, so I have decided to do an adventure.
I am planning to ride my bike (carbon 10-speed) from Canada to Mexico.
I have picked out the route; The Bike Centennial Route - predominantly a coastal route, which actually takes me right by my own home.
I am shooting for early Spring when it gets a little warmer and before summer traffic gets too crazy.
When I was a much younger man, I rode from Oregon to Mexico to raise money for Special Olympics and it took me 6.
5 days, as I rode hard and for long hours.
Now, I doubt I can handle that sort of pace, as it was back in the days of my College "track and field" days.
But, I hope to ride 200 miles per day, either way, as most of it is pretty flat and there will still be a tail wind most of the way during Spring Time, as those are the prevailing winds.
No, it is not going to be easy, and the way I figure it is, that it will either kill me or give me triumph; "Lance is Back!" It is a do or die, test of will for me.
Perhaps a midlife crisis thing, although, I thought I already did that.
Well, enough about me.
My question to all of you is which charity should I choose this time? I have several ways to go about this and one thought was to allow small kids groups to sell pledges and keep the money or 75% of it and then give 25% to a fund to give to a larger group.
This way 100s of small groups at the community level could make money and one large charity could get a big check.
It seems that any of the smaller groups could be in BC, WA, OR, CA or even Tijuana, Mexico.
They could get the pledges per mile, collect the money and keep most of it.
My thoughts were groups such as Little League, HS Bands, Soccer, Boy Scouts, Cheerleaders, DARE Programs and Youth Groups; could use this as a fundraiser locally - helping every community along the way - the parents, kids and community as a whole.
I would like advice on which group I should support or give the money too.
Perhaps some folks here might be involved in local charities that might like to take advantage of this? Incidentally, if this works out as well as I hope, I will be planning a bike ride from San Diego to Virginia Beach at the end of Summer, in 2008 a And thus, will have to pick another large charity then and 100s more local groups that may wish to be involved to help themselves.
