How to Remove the Manual Transmission on a 1998 Ford Ranger
- 1). Disconnect the battery using a wrench.
- 2). Detach the upper gearshift, lever, boot and console as a single assembly using a ratchet, ratchet extension, socket and Phillips screwdriver.
- 3). Raise the front and rear of your Ranger using a floor jack and support it with 4 jack stands under the frame.
- 4). Place a catch pan under the transmission and remove the drain plug with a wrench to drain the oil.
- 5). Unplug all electrical connectors, sensors and wiring harnesses from the transmission.
- 6). Detach the starter motor from the engine using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.
- 7). Detach the front drive shaft, if your Ranger model is equipped with a transfer case using a ratchet, ratchet extension, socket and pry bar.
- 8). Detach the rear drive shaft using a ratchet, ratchet extension, socket and pry bar.
- 9). Remove the exhaust inlet crossover pipe and catalytic converter as a single assembly using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. If necessary, use a breaker bar on the exhaust pipe mounting bolts for better leverage.

Support the transfer case with a transmission jack, if your Ranger is equipped with it. Then detach and remove it from the vehicle using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. - 11
Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line from the clutch slave cylinder using special tool 308-182 or a suitable hydraulic line disconnect tool. - 12
Support the transmission with a transmission jack and a safety strap. - 13
Loosen the two nuts securing the transmission insulator to the crossmember using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. - 14
Unscrew the six bolts securing the crossmember to the frame using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. - 15
Finish removing the two nuts securing the transmission insulator to the crossmember and remove the crossmeber from the vehicle. - 16
Unfasten the nine bolts that hold the transmission to the engine. - 17
Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
