How do I Check the Engine on a 2003 Subaru Outback?

    • 1). Remove the plastic dust cover from the Subaru’s diagnostic port and plug the scan tool’s datalink cable into the port. The port is located near the steering column, below the dashboard.

    • 2). Turn the ignition key to the run position and then follow the scan tool’s specific instructions for running a self test on the electronic control module.

    • 3). Write down the codes with the pen and paper when they display on the scan tool’s screen. Complete the self test per the scan tool’s specific instructions, making sure not to erase the codes unless you have already diagnosed and repaired the malfunction.

    • 4). Turn off the ignition key, disconnect the scan tool and put the cover back onto the diagnostic port.
