How to Replace a Key Cylinder on a 1991 Chevy Pickup
- 1). Turn the engine off in your Chevy truck. Raise the hood and prop it open with the hood support rod. Use a socket wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- 2). Pry off the horn cover from the steering wheel using a slotted screwdriver. Disconnect the wiring connector from the horn cap.
- 3). Remove the driver side airbag if your 1991 Chevy pickup is equipped with one. To do this, remove the two screws on the back of the steering wheel. Rotate the steering wheel about a quarter-turn to the right and insert a Phillips screwdriver into the two access holes at the back of the steering wheel to disengage the fastening pins. Disconnect the airbag's wiring connector. Remove the airbag from the steering wheel.
- 4). Remove the single, securing bolt and nut from the rear of the steering wheel. Pull the steering wheel off of the steering column.
- 5). Remove the upper cover from the steering column by prying it off with a slotted screwdriver. Remove the two screws securing the turn signal combination switch and pull it out of the steering column. You do not need to disconnect the wiring connector, but if the switch gets in your way, you can disconnect it and remove it from the steering column.
- 6). Turn the key cylinder to the "On" position. This will reveal a single screw securing the key cylinder to the steering column. Remove the screw with a Phillips screwdriver and pull the key cylinder out of the steering column.
- 7). Install the replacement key cylinder into the steering column and tighten the screw that you just removed to secure the key cylinder. Reattach the turn signal combination switch and reconnect the wiring connector, if you removed it earlier. Reinstall the two screws and place the top cover back onto the steering column.
- 8). Place the steering wheel on the steering column and reattach the single bolt and nut to secure it. Reinstall the airbag and the horn cover. Reconnect the battery and close the hood.
