Which Is Better for Changing the Oil: a Dealership or an Independent Chain?

    Independent Shop

    • An independent shop offers cheaper oil changes (because of lower overhead). An independent shop also offers personable service: You can meet your technician and communicate with him if other repairs are necessary. You can reach your mechanic if you have questions, which is unlikely in a dealership service department. Independent shops may offer quicker oil-change appointments while a dealer may require you to call days in advance.

    Dealership Service

    • A dealership employs trained technicians who are required to check manufacturer's specific wear-and-tear items while changing your oil. Dealers also perform recalls free of charge while your car is in for its oil change (if necessary). Many dealers offer perks, which may include roadside assistance or a warranty in between regular service intervals.

    Bottom Line

    • Have your oil changed at the shop where you feel most comfortable; it's a matter of preference. If your vehicle is still under manufacturer warranty, you may want to take it in to the dealer to avoid any warranty issues. Either shop can follow the manufacturer's recommended service schedule, but the independent shop can probably save you money.
