How to Remove the Fuel Filter From a 2007 Cobalt
- 1). Open the hood and remove the lid on the fuse and relay box located on the driver's side fender well. Flip the lid over and look at the illustration on the reverse side that indicates the position of all the components. Look for the fuel pump fuse location and pull the fuse out.
- 2). Start the engine and run it until it quits for lack of fuel. Turn the key off. This just depressurized the fuel system. Raise the rear of the car with the floor jack and place the jack stands under the rear axle. Lower the car to rest on the stands.
- 3). Locate the fuel filter on the passenger side frame rail just forward of the fuel tank. Disconnect the front flexible fuel line from the filter by pulling the white plastic tab up on the fuel line connector. Pull the fuel line off. Have a rag handy to catch the small amount of fuel that will escape.
- 4). Remove the rear connection on the fuel filter using the line wrenches. Turn the nut counterclockwise to remove. Loosen, but do not remove, the 10 mm bolt in the filter bracket using a wrench. Slide the filter out of the bracket.
- 5). Insert the new filter and tighten the bolt to hold it in place. Thread the rear hard line nut into the inlet side of the fuel filter by turning the connector clockwise and tightening it with the line wrench.
- 6). Push the flexible fuel line onto the outlet side of the fuel filter all the way, and while pushing the line toward the fuel filter, push the white plastic clip down to lock it in place.
- 7). Raise the car and remove the jack stands. Lower the car. Install the fuel pump fuse in the fuse relay box and replace the lid. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
