How to Troubleshoot a MacBook Laptop
- 1). Update the software. Apple releases updates periodically that address many of the most common problems affecting MacBook computers. To update your software, connect your MacBook to the Internet and click on the apple logo in the upper left-hand corner of the menu bar at the top of the screen. Select the option for software update and wait as the computer checks to see if updates are available. Follow the on screen directions for installing any available updates.
- 2). Repair disk permissions on your MacBook. Many MacBook software problems are rooted in permissions issues, which can be repaired easily using software provided by Apple. From the finder window, select the applications folder, then the utilities folder. Select the disk utility application. Click the name of your MacBook's hard disk drive and select the repair disk permissions option at the bottom of the screen.
- 3). Restart the computer. As elementary as it may sound, restarting the computer is often one the best solution to MacBook problems. Exit all of the programs currently running on the computer, then click on the apple logo in the upper hand left corner of the menu bar. Select "Restart" and wait as your computer shuts down and restarts.
- 4). If your MacBook problems persist, you may need to schedule an appointment at your local Apple genius bar. Visit the genius bar website (see Resources) and select your own city and state to make an appointment.
