How to Change the CD Drive in Laptop Computers

    • 1). Turn your laptop off, remove the power cable and close the display screen.

    • 2). Slide the battery out of its compartment on the bottom of the computer. Locate the captive screw holding the disc drive in place. This will be in a different location on many laptops but as a general rule it is on the underside of the laptop, close to the edge and near the mouth of the drive. This information will also be detailed in the user guide of your particular laptop.

    • 3). Remove the captive screw holding the disc drive in place.

    • 4). Grip the disc drive by its end and slide the entire drive out of the side of the computer.

    • 5). Slide a new disc drive into the compartment until it is all the way inside the computer and the mouth of the drive is flush with the side of the computer.

    • 6). Replace the captive screw and battery.
