How to Use a Standard Power Supply to Power Only Hard Drives

- 1). Locate the motherboard connector on the secondary power supply. The connector is either 20- or 24-pins and is the largest connector coming from the power supply.
- 2). Locate the green wire feeding into the motherboard connector. There is only one green wire attached to this connector.
- 3). Locate the two black wires on either side of the green wire.
- 4). Connect one terminal of the diagnostic self test switch to the green wire connector and the remaining terminal to either of the black wire connectors. This diagnostic self test allows the power supply to pass the initialization self test and operate as though plugged into a motherboard.
- 5). Connect a hard drive power connector to each hard drive to be powered independently by the power supply unit.
