- 1). Open the Windows Media Player from your desktop or from the Start menu. Allow the player to open completely before moving to the next step.
- 2). Right-click in open space at the top of the Media Player. Click "Help" in the drop-down menu. Mouse over to the new drop-down menu and click "About Windows Media Player."
- 3). Read the year of the player and the version number in the new window. You can also find the product ID number in this box.
- 4). Match the Windows Media Player version number you found in Step 3 with the WMP Version description on the chart at the Microsoft Support website: "How to determine the version of Windows Media Player." For example, version No. 11.0.5721.5230 corresponds with WMP 11 for Windows XP, and version No. 11.0.6000.6344 corresponds with WMP 11 for Windows Vista.
