How to Take Apart a Dell Inspiron B130

    • 1). Shut down your computer using its most current operating system. Close the LCD screen and disconnect all cables and devices from the laptop. Place the computer face down over a flat work surface. Rotate the computer so the front opening is facing forward.

    • 2). Locate the battery near the top of the laptop's bottom casing. Press on the battery's release button, and then remove the battery pack from the laptop. Locate the hard drive in the laptop's upper-right corner. Untighten the two captive Phillips-head screws from the hard drive's cover. Remove the cover, grasp the hard drive's black pull-tab, and then remove the hard drive from its compartment.

    • 3). Locate the CD/DVD or optical drive in the bottom-left corner of the laptop. Locate and remove the drive's single retaining Phillips-head screw labeled with a pad lock symbol. Insert a small, flat-head screwdriver into the screw hole, and then disengage the small metal indentation securing the drive into place. Grasp the drive's face plate, and then pull it out of the drive compartment.

    • 4). Locate the memory compartment cover situated to the right of the now-empty optical drive. Untighten the captive Phillips-head screws securing the cover in place. Remove the cover from the laptop. Remove the two RAM modules inside the memory compartment by spreading the locking tabs on either side of each module. Tilt each module up at a 45-degree angle, and then slide each module out of its memory slot. Store the modules in a static-free plastic bag to prevent against electrical damage.

    • 5). Locate the wireless card inside the memory compartment below the empty memory slots. Disconnect the two antenna cables from the card, and then remove the card the same way you removed the RAM modules.

    • 6). Locate the heat sink in the upper-right corner of the bottom casing. Untighten the single captive Phillips-head screw securing its cover in place. Remove the cover. Untighten the four captive Phillips-head screws securing the heat sink in place. Grasp the heat sink's pull-strap, and then lift the heat sink out of its compartment, revealing the processor chip.

    • 7). Turn the processor chip's flat-head locking screw in counterclockwise direction until it is disengaged from its socket. Remove the processor from the computer and set it aside. Remove the remaining Phillips-head screws from the laptop's bottom casing.

    • 8). Place the laptop face up, and then open the LCD screen all the way. Insert a small, flat-head screwdriver into the keyboard bezel's right side. Pry the bezel from the laptop. The bezel is a thin, protective plastic strip situated between the LCD screen and keyboard assembly.

    • 9). Remove the two Phillips-head screws securing the keyboard in place. Lift up on the keyboard until the ribbon cable is visible on the keyboard's bottom side. Disconnect the ribbon cable from its connector on the motherboard. Remove the keyboard from the laptop completely.

Close the LCD screen and place the laptop vertically so the back panel is facing upward. Remove the two Phillips-head screws from the back panel. Place the laptop face up and reopen the LCD screen. Locate and disconnect the LCD video ribbon extending from the screen's left side to the center of the motherboard. Remove the LCD screen assembly from the laptop's base and set it aside.

Remove the remaining Phillips-head screws from the laptop's top casing. Disconnect the touchpad cable from the motherboard. The touchpad cable is a small, white ribbon cable situated just above the touchpad device. You should see a small access hole above the touchpad where the cable is accessible. Remove the top casing from the laptop's base and set it aside.
