Is Core 2 Duo Obsolete?

    History

    • Intel released the Core 2 Duo in July 2006 amidst great anticipation among retailers. The Core 2 Duo brand increased front-side bus speeds and cache memory over Intel's previous family of CPUs.

    Considerations

    • A person can still purchase computers with the Core 2 Duo architecture but will not be able to upgrade this system with newer technologies because the newer CPUs that are replacing the Core 2 Duo require new motherboards, memory and controllers.

    Warning

    • The industry has begun phasing out Core 2 Duo processors in favor of the next line of micro-architecture families including the Xeon, i3, i5 and i7. These CPUs will gradually replace the Core 2 Duo as more people buy computers with these products.
