Paintless Dent Repair Techniques
- The first and easiest way to remove a dent without having to paint it involves a regular household plunger. Any style of plunger will work. Begin by wetting the dent with water and adding a small amount of car wash soap or dish liquid. This helps create suction between the plunger and the car's surface, and also allows you to slide the plunger around on the car. Place the plunger over the dent and press it against the car. Don't press hard enough to push the metal in and create a larger dent. Press the plunger until a suction is created. Use regular plunging motions and pull back very hard to remove the dent. This step can be repeated as many times as necessary to pull the metal into place. The plunger can be slid around on the car's surface to remove parts of the dent at a time. Using a plunger can often pop the metal into place with no further repair work required.
- Dents that can't be removed by using a plunger may need more force to pop them into place. If the dent is located on a fender or other area that can accessed from both sides, use a metal dolly and body hammer. These tools can be found at any auto parts store. A block of wood can sometimes be used in place of a metal dolly, as long as the wood is at least an inch thick and not rotted.
Remove any plastic liners or parts behind the dented metal so you can access the back of the dent. Place the dolly or block of wood against the back of the dent and tap on it with the body hammer. Don't hit the hammer directly against the metal because it may cause a sharp dent in the metal, chipping the paint or creating more dents. Gently tap the hammer against the dolly or block until the metal of the dent is pushed back into place. If you push too much and create a high spot in the metal, go to the outside, place the wood against the high area and gently tap until it is flush with the surface of the car.
