How to Adjust the Steering Wheel for a 1996 Chevy Cavalier
- 1). Turn the steering wheel to ensure the front wheels are straight.
- 2). Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal, using a wrench.
- 3). Remove the three screws with a screwdriver on the bottom of the steering column cover and pull the cover away from the column.
- 4). Remove the three screws with a screwdriver on the the lower sound-insulator pad below the steering column. Pull the insulator pad away from the bottom of the dashboard.
- 5). Unplug the yellow connector-position-assurance harness at the bottom of the steering column. This will disable the airbag located in the steering wheel.
- 6). Remove the two airbag-module retaining screws with a screwdriver on the rear of the steering wheel. Disconnect the electrical connection running to the airbag module and remove the airbag module.
- 7). Remove the steering wheel retaining nut with a ratchet wrench.
- 8). Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft, using a steering-wheel puller and ratchet wrench.
- 9). Install the steering wheel, adjusting it accordingly. With the wheels straight, the steering wheel should be right side up and perfectly symmetrical. Install the steering-wheel retaining nut with a torque wrench, tightening the nut to 30 foot-pounds.

Reconnect the electrical connection to the airbag module, place the airbag module in position, and install the two airbag-module retaining screws with a screwdriver located on the back of the steering wheel. - 11
Reconnect the yellow connector-position-assurance harness at the bottom of the steering column. This will enable the airbag located in the steering wheel. - 12
Place the lower insulator pad into position and replace the three pad-retaining screws with a screwdriver. - 13
Place the steering-column cover around the steering column and install the three retaining screws with a screwdriver. - 14
Connect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal with a wrench.
