How to Replace the Water Pump on a 1991 Skylark
- 1). Turn your engine off, and leave it for some time to allow it to completely cool. Open the hood of your Skylark. Use a wrench to remove the bolt clamp attached to the negative battery terminal. Lift the negative cable away from the terminal.
- 2). Move the drain pan directly underneath the radiator. Find the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator and remove it. Drain the coolant into the pan. Reattach the plug, and place the drain pan in a safe area.
- 3). Use a wrench to remove the timing belt rear protective covers near the engine. Remove the clamp attached to the lower radiator hose with the nut driver. Disconnect the hose from the Skylark's water pump.
- 4). Remove the mounting bolts from the water pump, and lift it from the vehicle. Attach a new gasket and O-ring to the water pump. Fix the water pump in place with the mounting bolts at a torque of 18 foot-pounds.
- 5). Connect the lower radiator hose to the water pump, and fix it in place with the hose clamp. Reattach the timing belt covers. Open the radiator cap, and replace the coolant in the radiator. Reattach the negative battery cable on the terminal, and fix it in place with the clamp bolt. Turn on the engine to check that the water pump works correctly.
