How to Access Your PC From Your Laptop
- 1). Set up a router. Plug the router in near the desktop PC. Connect a network cable from the PC's network card to an open port on the back of the router. Open a web browser and type the router's IP address and then enter the router's user name and password. Give the router network a name and choose to set-up any security settings you want.
- 2). Connect your laptop to the router. If you have a wireless router and a wireless card on your laptop, select the list of wireless networks in the "Network" area in the "Control Panel" and select the router and click "Connect." You can also connect a cable from the laptop's network card to the router.
- 3). Share your desktop PC drives. Right-click on the drives and choose "Properties" and then choose the "Sharing" tab. Check the box to share the drive.
- 4). Go to the "Control Panel" and in the "System" area, click on the "Computer name." Click the "Change settings" button and then click to change the name. In the workgroup area, give the workgroup a name. Do this on both computers and make sure the workgroup name is the same.
