How to Tell Persian Rugs

    • 1). Find out if the carpet is handwoven or machine made. Authentic Persian carpets are handwoven. The process is quite long and often takes a significant amount of time to complete. Cotton threads are used in a pattern that moves from the top to the bottom part of the carpet. The upper portion is finished off in silk, wool or cotton and is done manually. Turn the carpet over and look at it. If you find that the design is visible on the back of the carpet, then the carpet is not handmade.

    • 2). Observe the motifs on the carpet. Persian rugs are largely comprised of floral prints. There are occasionally animals and birds. You will also find some geometric art in these carpets.

    • 3). Make sure your hand is dry and rub it vigorously on a rug that is advertised as being a Persian silk rug. Real silk will heat up a bit, whereas other fibers will not.

    • 4). Compare designs of Persian rugs. If there are two or more rugs with the exact same design, they are fakes.
