What Is "Stepping" in a Processor?

    Step Names

    • New processors start with the step name A-0. As "errata" (defects) are discovered and removed, the step name changes. The next version beyond A-0 is A-1 and this continues until either a major change takes place or the accumulation of minor changes is significant -- then the letter part of the name changes to B-0. This continues until the processor is ready for release.

    Specification Update

    • Each manufacturer of processors keeps a record of step names and the errata that was addressed at each level. This record is called the specification update. At the end of the alpha testing cycle the document becomes available online at the manufacturer's website.

    Overclocking

    • Usually, the later the stepping the better, as more bugs have been removed, but not always. Some steppings add unnecessary features that slow down the processor. Hackers often prefer an earlier stepping because it can be overclocked further. Overclocking is setting the computer clock speed up so the processor will run faster.
