How to Keep Your Boots in Shape

    • 1). Place a boot or shoe tree inside each boot when you're not wearing them. A boot tree is a metal or plastic device that helps keep the shape of the boot by holding up the material instead of letting the top of the boot flop over. For boots that are too small or short for a boot or shoe tree, stuff them with newspaper or old fabric.

    • 2). Clean your boots when they get dirty. Dirt and oil can ruin the shape of boots over time, so use the proper cleaning solution for the material your boots are made of, especially if they are leather or suede. Other types of boots, like hiking or work boots, might require different care. In general, a damp cloth will suffice to remove surface dirt from most types of material.

    • 3). Apply a weather-proofing spray to your boots. Water, heat or snow can ruin or alter the shape of boots. Many weather-proofing shoe sprays are safe to use on leather, suede or fabric boots. Check the label on your weather-proofing spray to make sure it is safe for your boots.

    • 4). Store your boots in a clean, dry and cool place. Exposure to dust, mildew, or moths in the closet can compromise the life, quality and shape of your boots. Keep them on a shoe rack or leave them in the original box.
