How to Open an IBM Laptop Case

    • 1). Turn the laptop off and then place it face-down on a table or desk.

    • 2). Release the latch for the battery cover. Take the battery out of the case and set it aside.

    • 3). Locate the screws that are in various locations in the back cover of the laptop.

    • 4). Remove the screws from the back cover with the Phillips screwdriver. Many IBM laptops have five to seven screws that secure the bottom of the cover to the case.

    • 5). Separate the back cover from the base by gently pulling it apart. Lift the cover off of the case and set it aside. If the back cover is not in once piece, turn the laptop over and set it face-up.

    • 6). Lift on the bottom edge of the keyboard to separate it from the case. Find and disconnect the ribbon cable that is connected to the motherboard. Take the keyboard out and set it aside.

    • 7). Lift up on the palm rest assembly to separate it from the case. Take the palm rest assembly off of the laptop and set it aside.

    • 8). View the inside of the case and identify the components that need to be replaced.
