How to Build an AMD 64 Computer

    • 1). Decide which AMD 64 processor you want to use for your new computer. Check which type of socket the processor connects to on a motherboard and its overall speed capabilities. Purchase a corresponding motherboard that has the same type of socket connector and also has enough memory slots for the amount of RAM you intend to install. Buy both a sound card and video card that use the same type of slots that the motherboard has.

    • 2). Pick a computer case that fits the motherboard you bought. Acquire the remaining internal components you will need to build your computer such as a hard drive, power supply, case fan, and DVD rewritable drive. Choose the external components you will also need such as a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Buy the operating system software that you will want installed on your computer such as Windows Vista or Linux.

    • 3). Use a screwdriver to detach the small case screws along the side of the computer case. Pull off or slide back the side panel so you can see the inside of the case. Locate the larger mounting screws that came with your motherboard and use them to screw the motherboard to the inside of the case. Slide the power supply unit into the drive bay at the very top of the case and fix into place with the corresponding screws. Take the wide and thin yellow cable with the white female end and plug it into the male end on the motherboard.

    • 4). Push the AMD 64 processor down onto the processor socket. Place the processor fan over the processor and fix it in place by installing the screws on each of the four sides of the fan. Install the RAM modules by snapping them down into the memory slots. Check the bottom of the RAM before pushing it in to see if it has a "keyed" notch that indicates which direction it needs to be placed.

    • 5). Snap your expansion cards, such as the video or sound card, into their slots and then keep them in place by putting in the screws on the back of the computer case. Slide your remaining drives, such as the DVD drive, into the drive bays at the front of the case and connect them to the power supply with the yellow cables. Put the case fan over the square hole on the side or back of the case and install the screws on the sides.

    • 6). Place the side panel back onto the case and reinstall the case screws. Plug in the power cord to an electrical wall outlet and then plug in the cables for the external components. Power on the machine and place the installation CD for your operating system in the CD or DVD drive bay.

    • 7). Complete the setup and registration process and then wait for the operating system to finish installing.
