How Do I Replace Factory Truck Air Filters?

    • 1). Open the hood. Locate the air cleaner, which is typically at the front of the engine compartment on most trucks.

    • 2). Remove the plastic air cleaner cover to access the air filter. Depress the retaining tabs while lifting the cover straight up or remove the retaining screws with a Phillips head screwdriver. Some trucks have retaining clips that must be flipped up to release the cover from the housing.

    • 3). Lift the air filter from the air cleaner housing carefully so as to avoid dislodging any large deposits of dirt. Discard the old filter.

    • 4). Clean the inside of the air cleaner housing and the intake tube with a damp shop rag. Also clean the mating surface of the air cleaner where the cover and the filter are located. Let the air cleaner air-dry.

    • 5). Place the new filter element into the housing. Make sure the pleated side of the filter is facing the flow of air from the intake tube in the front of the vehicle. Replace the air cleaner cover and press it into position until it snaps into place or reinstall the retaining screws. Close the hood.
