1998 Ford Escort: Starter Removal

    • 1). Locate and remove the negative battery cable from the negative terminal on the battery using a wrench. Raise the front of the car on a jack, then place a set of jack stands under the frame rails to support it. Remove the jack so it is not in the way.

    • 2). Locate the starter from under the front end of the car. It is located between the firewall and the back of the engine. There are two electrical connectors on the starter solenoid, one plug-in connector and one stud with a retaining nut on it. Disconnect the plug in connector by pressing the locking tab on the connector them pull it out of the starter.

    • 3). Remove the retaining nut on the second electrical connector with a socket and ratchet. Slide the wire off the stud and push it aside for now.

    • 4). Remove the lower mounting bolt from the starter with a socket and ratchet, setting the bolt aside for now. Support the starter by hand then remove the upper mounting bolt with your socket and ratchet. Remove the starter motor from the engine compartment.
