Microsoft Windows 98 is one of the earlier versions of Microsoft's operating systems. It was released to the public in 1998, and was followed by a second version in 1999. It is now outdated enough that Microsoft no longer provides support for it. However, the system is still out there, and multiple versions of Internet Explorer are compatible with it. - Windows 98 comes standard with Internet Explorer 5. This version of IE is extremely outdated, as it is more than 10 years old. It is the first version compatible with Windows 98, and the last compatible with Windows 95. Its most updated Service Pack (Internet Explorer 5.5) requires a minimum of 16 MB of RAM to run, as well as a small amount of spare disk space.
- Internet Explorer 6 is also compatible with Windows 98. It requires 16 MB of RAM and its full install size is 11.5 MB, or 12.4 MB for Windows 98 Version 2. Internet Explorer 6 is optimized for Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows NT, but it will still work on Windows 98, and is more ideal than Internet Explorer 5. Internet Explorer's newest two versions (as of 2010), 7 and 8, are not compatible with Windows 98.
- While Internet Explorer 5 and 6 are compatible with Windows 98, they are not ideal for browsing today's Internet. The newer versions of Internet Explorer have more advanced security and browsing capabilities, and provide a more streamlined browsing experience. When using an older browser, you may experience slowness and choppiness, especially when scrolling down a long page. You also may not be able to open certain pages. The only fix for this, however, is to upgrade your computer to Windows XP, Vista or 7, which are all compatible with the latest browsers, and are more modern systems.
