How to Disable the System Restore Vista Registry
- 1). Click the blue Windows orb at the bottom of the screen. Right-click the "Computer" icon and then click "Properties."
- 2). Click the "System Protection" task on the left side of the window.
- 3). Remove the check from next to each hard drive on the list and then click "OK." System Restore is turned off. Continue to the next step to learn how to prevent changes to System Restore using the registry.
- 4). Click the Windows orb. Type "regedit" without quotation marks in the search box at the bottom of the Start menu and press "Enter" to open the registry editor.
- 5). Use the folder listing in the left pane of the window to navigate to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE," "SOFTWARE," "Policies," "Microsoft" and "Windows NT" folders.
- 6). Right-click the "Windows NT" folder and then click "New" and "Key." Type the name "SystemRestore" without a space and press "Enter." Click the "SystemRestore" folder.
- 7). Right-click in the open area in the right pane of the window. Click "New" and "DWORD (32-bit) Value." A new registry entry appears on the right side of the window. Type the name "DisableConfig" and press "Enter."
- 8). Double-click the new "DisableConfig" registry entry. Change the number under "Value Data" to 1.
- 9). Click "OK" and close the registry editor.
