How to Upgrade an Inspiron 9400
- 1). Turn off your laptop and disconnect the AC cable from its socket. Close the LCD screen and place the laptop face down on a flat work surface. Position the laptop so the front edge is facing forward.
- 2). Locate the battery pack in the upper-right corner of the laptop. Slide the battery release button to the left, and then remove the battery from its compartment.
- 3). Locate the memory compartment cover near the center of the laptop's bottom casing. Remove the two Phillips screws securing the cover in place. Remove the cover from the laptop completely. There are two memory modules inside the compartment. Remove the top module first. Spread the retaining latches on each side of the module. Tilt the module upward at an angle. Pull the RAM module out of its memory slot. Repeat this for each module removed.
- 4). Install the new RAM module by tilting it at an angle while placing it into an empty memory slot. Press down on the memory module until it snaps into place. Repeat this for each module you install.
- 1). Locate the hard drive compartment in the upper-right corner below the empty battery compartment.
- 2). Remove the two Phillips screws securing the hard drive in place. Grasp the face of the hard drive and pull it out of its compartment and set it aside.
- 3). Slide the replacement hard drive into the empty drive compartment until it clicks into place. Replace the two screws so the hard drive is fastened to the laptop.
- 1). Locate the wireless card compartment cover in the upper-left corner of the bottom casing. Remove the securing Phillips screws from the cover, and then remove it from the laptop. Disconnect the two antenna cables from the wireless card. Remove all remaining Phillips screws from the laptop's bottom casing.
- 2). Place the laptop face up and open the LCD screen all the way. Pry off the keyboard bezel located between the LCD screen and keyboard assembly. Remove the two Phillips screws securing the keyboard in place. Grasp the top of the keyboard, tilt it upward and place it face down over the palm-rest area. Disconnect the keyboard's ribbon cable from its connector on the motherboard. Remove the keyboard from the laptop.
- 3). Locate the LCD ribbon cable from the LCD screen's left side. Disconnect the cable from the motherboard. Remove the Phillips screws from both the right and left LCD hinges. Lift the LCD screen off the laptop's base. Set it aside.
- 4). Remove the six screws securing the laptop's top casing to the base. Locate the trackpad cable extending from the top side of the trackpad device. Disconnect the cable from its connector on the motherboard. Carefully remove the top casing from the laptop.
- 5). Locate the heat sink in the upper-left corner of the motherboard. Remove its four Phillips screws, and then carefully lift it out of the motherboard and set it aside. This reveals the processor chip. Turn its flat-head locking screw one-half turn in the counterclockwise direction. Remove the processor from the laptop. Reverse this procedure to install the new processor and reassemble the laptop.
