How to Upgrade Atari CX853 Memory
- 1). Obtain one or more CX853 memory modules, if you haven't already. They're readily available online. (See Resources for a few options.)
- 2). Switch the Atari 800 computer's power off to prevent damage. If you want to avoid inadvertently turning the power on during the memory upgrade, unplug the computer.
- 3). Remove the lid above the keyboard. Turn two small latches or remove a couple of screws, depending upon the computer's model year. Lift the lid and set it aside. Clean the area under the lid if it's dusty.
- 4). Insert the Atari CX853 memory module in the first free slot behind the CX801 "10K ROM" unit and the cartridge ports. Install it firmly and evenly, so that it doesn't become loose on either end.
- 5). Add up to three CX853 modules in the other free slots for a total of 48 kilobytes of RAM. If too few slots remain open, remove an 8K CX852 cartridge.
- 6). Secure the lid in its former position, covering the expansion slots. Connect any other desired accessories or cartridges. Power on the computer.
- 7). Test the additional memory. If it doesn't work, the upgrade module may be inserted unevenly, the slot could have failed, or the module might have been damaged. Try to rectify such problems by removing and reinstalling the Atari CX853 or putting it in a different slot.
