How do I Fix a Windows Computer Problem?

    Manual Troubleshooting

    • 1). Click the "Start" button. Select "Shut Down" or "Turn off Computer" and click "Restart." Wait for Windows to re-boot and see if this fixes the problem. Many simple problems, such as a keyboard or computer mouse that won't work properly or no audio sounds, can be resolved this way.

    • 2). Increase Windows' virtual memory if you receive the "Your system is running low on virtual memory" message. Click the "Start" button and select "Run" in Windows XP or click the Windows logo button in Vista and Windows 7. Type "sysdm.cpl" in the "Run" box in XP or in the "Search files" box in Vista and 7. Press "Enter." Select the "Advanced" tab and click "Settings" in the Performance section. Select the "Advanced" tab and click "Change." Uncheck the "Automatically manage paging file size" box. Click your computer's hard drive letter. Click "Custom size" and, in the "Initial Size" or "Maximum size" box, type a larger number than what is shown in the "Currently Allocated" section. Click "OK." Close the "System Properties" box.

    • 3). Perform a System Restore to fix errors or problems that have occurred after uninstalling a program or taking some other action that has made it unstable. Click the "Start" or Windows logo button. Go to "All Programs" and select "Accessories." Select "System Tools" and click "System Restore." Click "Next." Select a date and time from the restore points listed, such as the day before your computer became unstable. Click "Next." Click "Finish," Wait for Windows to restart your computer and apply the restore point.

    • 4). Open your Internet browser. Go to the website of a free malware or virus scanner, such as Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware or Trend Micro's HouseCall. Download and save the program to your computer. Install the program. Open the virus scanner software and perform a quick or full scan of your system. Click "Fix" or "Delete" to remove all viruses and malware.

    Automatic Troubleshooting

    • 1). Go to the Microsoft.com website. Click "Microsoft Support Home" under the "Support" tab at the top. Type "fix it center" in the search box. Press "Enter." Click on the "Microsoft Fix it Solution Center" search result to be taken to the Microsoft Fix it Center website.

    • 2). Slide your mouse over the "Windows" section on the left side of the page. Or, if you're having problems with Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office or Windows Media Player, slide your mouse over to their respective sections on the left.

    • 3). Read the descriptions of problems from the list to find one that corresponds to your problem. Examples of problems that Microsoft Fix it Center lists CD/DVD read and write problems and printing errors. Click the description link or the Microsoft Fix-it icon button. Read the "What it fixes" section to determine if the automated solution might fix your problem.

    • 4). Click the "Run Now" button. Save the automatic troubleshooting file to your computer. Double-click on the saved "exe" file to open and run the troubleshooter. Click "Accept." Select the recommended "Detect problems and apply the fixes for me" option. Wait for Microsoft's tool to check for and automatically fix problems. Click "Next" on the summary screen. Select "Yes, the problem has been fixed" and click "Submit." Click "Finish."
