How to Do a Transmission Flush on a Honda Civic 2001

    • 1). Put the oil catch pan underneath the transmission drain plug.

    • 2). Remove the transmission drain plug with a 3/8-inch ratchet and let the fluid run out into the catch pan. The drain plug has a square head that the head of the ratchet will fit into.

    • 3). Put the transmission drain plug back in and tighten down with the 3/8-inch ratchet once the fluid has completely drained out.

    • 4). Remove the transmission dipstick from the engine and put a funnel inside of the dipstick tube.

    • 5). Add 3 quarts of the Honda ATF fluid to the transmission. Wait about 5 minutes for the fluid to drain down into the pan and then remove the transmission drain pan bolt and drain the fluid again into the catch pan.

    • 6). Tighten the drain plug back down and add 3 more quarts of fluid to the transmission and wait 5 minutes. Then drain the fluid again and put the drain plug back in and tighten it down.

    • 7). Add 3 more quarts of the ATF fluid to the transmission one more time and wait another 5 minutes and drain. Put the drain bolt back in and tighten down very tight because this will be the final time that you remove the drain bolt.

    • 8). Add 3 and 1/2 quarts of the Honda ATF fluid to the transmission. Crank the car and let the engine heat up to operating temperature and check the transmission fluid level on the dipstick while the engine is running to get an accurate reading.
