Specifications of the Sony VAIO VGN-FS742/W

    System Specifications

    • The Sony VAIO VGN-FS742/W ran on the Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition operating system. The processor was an Intel Pentium M Processor 740, which executed its fundamental tasks at 1.73 gigahertz and connected with the motherboard for data transfer at a speed of 533 megahertz. The chip set was also from Intel: a 915GM that boosts the computer's audio and video/graphics capabilities. Using a 400 MHz second-generational DDR SDRAM architecture, the VGN-FS742/W had 2GB of system memory.

    Storage and Media

    • Notably, the Sony VAIO VGN-FS742/W didn't have the best hard disk drive specifications: an 80GB of storage space with an industry-low rotational speed of 4,200 revolutions per minute. Also, it connected to the computer using a Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment interface, which the Serial ATA by then had replaced. Nevertheless, the optional drive appeared compensatory: a CD/DVD player and burner with dual-layer disc support. The VAIO VGN-FS742/W's audio and video/graphics controllers were integrated on the motherboard. The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, which provided the laptop's video and graphics, took up to 128MB of system memory.

    Modem, Networking, Connectors

    • The modem of the Sony VAIO VGN-FS742/W was an integrated modem with the International Telecommunication Union v.90 standard. Wired local area networking consisted of a 100Mbps Ethernet driver, and wireless LAN was provided by the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG adapter with adherence to the International Electrical and Electronics Engineers 802.11b/g pair of standards. An RJ-11 and RJ-45 jack accompanied the modem and Ethernet, respectively. Other connectors included headphone and microphone jacks, IEEE 1394 interface, Memory Stick card slot, VGA output and three USB 2.0 ports.

    Physical and Power Specs

    • Each Sony VAIO VGN-FS742/W had an 88-key QWERTY keyboard and weighed around 6 lbs. The physical dimensions were a 14.33-inch width, 10.41-inch depth and 1- to 1.41-inch height from front to rear. The computer came with a 90-watt AC power adapter and a lithium-ion battery capable of generating up to two hours of battery life.
