Even though Windows offers a utility to recover files deleted from an "NTFS" partition-- deleted from the Recycle Bin--there are times when you will still need a third-party recovery program. Most often, this is required because you already emptied he recycle bin and as far as Windows is concerned, nothing is there. However, when Windows "deletes" a file from the recycle bin, it simply marks the space as available. If you do not add anything else to your hard drive, then you can use a program to recover the file, even though it was "deleted." - "SoftPerfect File Recovery" offers to recover files both from older FAT partitions and from newer NTFS partitions. It is listed as being compatible with all versions of Windows from Windows 95 through "Windows Vista. While Windows 7 is not listed, most programs certified to work with Vista should also work with Windows 7. The software can recover files even after they have been deleted from the hard drive and generally does a reasonably good job of this.
- Designed specifically for NTFS partitions, this software says it was developed specifically for Windows XP. The software offers to recover deleted files from any NTFS partition. However, the software can also be useful even if you have formatted the drive since it is capable of reading through your hard drive and recovering even a previously reformatted partition. This makes it much more valuable to users who need more robust file recovery. The software is available in a limited demo version for free or you can purchase it for $99 as of September 2010.
- Another paid file recovery program, "Active UnEraser" is designed to work with a variety of different partitions, including most versions of FAT and NTFS partitions. Like the Disk Doctors" program, the software is also capable of recovering files from drives that have been reformatted. The single user license is $49.99 as of September 2010, with bulk licenses being offered at a discount, beginning at $199.99 for five licenses.
