Home Remedies for Brown, Rough Spots on Knees & Elbows

    Sugar Scrub

    • A sugar scrub works well to slough off dead, dry skin that may be clinging to your elbows and knees and making them rough and dark. Mix a sugar scrub by adding a half cup of brown sugar to just enough olive oil to make a paste that has the consistency of toothpaste. Work it into your elbows and knees. Try scrubbing in the shower, while your skin is softer. You can scrub away the dead skin with your sugar scrub, and the heat, steam and water will infuse much-needed moisture into the skin below. Try doing this three times a week for rough knees and elbows.

    Lemon Milk Bath

    • A lemon milk bath is effective in dissolving rough patches on legs and knees. Lemon has a lightening effect on skin. Mix the juice of one lemon with a cup of milk and warm carefully in the microwave. Test the temperature to make sure it's not too hot and give it a stir. Dip a washcloth in the mixture, soaking it completely, and spread the washcloth over one of your knees. You can do two knees simultaneously with two wash cloths, or you can heat the mixture again and do the next knee after five minutes. Afterward, your knees and elbows should have softened up noticeably.

    Sock Wrap

    • The problem with continually rubbing regular moisturizer on your knees and elbows to get rid of brown, rough patches is that the moisturizer doesn't have adequate time to sink into the skin before it dries, meaning it doesn't do enough to moisturize those patches and get rid of them. Make a sock wrap to keep the moisturizer protected so that it has ample time and warmth to heal the skin. Choose a very rich cream. Cut the toe off a tube sock and cover the elbow in the rich cream. Put on much more than you usually would. Then, slip the sock over the elbow to hold all of the moisture in so that it saturates the skin. Do the same for your other elbow and use a larger sock for your knees. Remove in the morning to reveal smoother skin without all of the brown patches.
