Windows XP was released in 2001 as the follow-up to Windows 2000 and ME. It was later replaced by Windows Vista. This version came with advanced features like wireless network support and security features like the Windows Security Center and Windows Firewall. Windows XP Professional tools allow users to do tasks like access and control remote computers or optimize computers shared across a network. These tools are free, and users can download them from the Microsoft website. - This tool gives users control over shared computers running Windows XP operating systems, including Professional. The target audience for this tool is users with a large number of shared computers, including school computer labs, Internet cafes and libraries. Further, this tool is aimed at people who are not IT (information technology) professionals. Features include the ability to tell the system what a person can and cannot do on a shared workstation, and it also blocks users from making unwarranted changes to the system. It will also track any changes made by viruses, malware (downloads to the computer without the user's knowledge or permission) or spyware (collects pieces of information about a user). The Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit will also clear caches of user information when a new user logs into the system.
- These are features that were created after the launch of the software program. These tools allow users to do things like create HTML (HyperText Markup Language) picture slideshows and view RAW (a file that has had little to no changes made to it) image files. The SyncToy feature of the PowerToys toolkit allows users to connect to mobile devices and copy or synch up information. Other features include a CD slideshow creation tool, an image resize function and a taskbar magnification tool. Before users can install this version of PowerToys, they must uninstall any old version currently installed on their computer.
- ActiveX is a program framework that identifies software components that can be reused over different systems. The Remote Desktop Connection ActiveX Control allows users to remotely access their computer from another computer. Users can do this via Internet Explorer. This tool is only compatible with computers that are currently running Windows XP Professional and the Internet Information Services hosting program. Users can run this tool even if they do not have a VPN (virtual private network) or standard private network. The installation directory for this software program is C:\Windows\Web\TSWeb. Users will have to create the TsWeb folder if it is not already installed on their computer.
