How to Replace Headlight Bulbs on a 2000 Nissan Maxima

    • 1). Ensure the keys are not in the ignition and the headlight switch is in the off position. Release the hood latch.

    • 2). Open the hood and approach the headlight assembly with the faulty headlight bulb.

    • 3). Locate the wire harness connection attached to the headlight blades (concealed from the plug of the wire harness). Squeeze the release tabs on both sides of the plug to release it and then pull it straight back from the bulb blades.

    • 4). Pull the rubber weather seal off by hand that covers the wire clip holding the headlight bulb into the assembly.

    • 5). Inspect the wire retainer before you attempt to remove it. Trying to remove it from the incorrect side may cause it to fall off its screw hinge. Locate the side of the wire opposite the hinge screw. A telescopic mirror may help you, but it's not required.

    • 6). Press the end of the wire retainer inward and then away from the notch in the retaining latch. Swing the clip on the hinge and then reach in to remove the headlight bulb, noting the position inside the headlight assembly to properly install the new bulb.

    • 7). Place a pair of disposable gloves on your hands to avoid touching the glass bulb portion of the replacement headlight.

    • 8). Insert the bulb into the headlight assembly the same way the old bulb was installed and hold it with a finger until you can swing the wire clip in place and reconnect the clip to the retaining latch. This will require pressing inward on the clip and slightly manipulating it onto the latch.

    • 9). Replace the weather seal making sure it's seated on the headlight assembly and covering the headlight and assembly to protect them from moisture or other contaminants.

Reconnect the wire harness by aligning the three-prongs of the plug to the blades on the bulb and push it in. The release tabs will automatically lock the plug in place. Test the headlight to make sure it's working properly.
