How to Replace an Acer Notebook DVD Drive
- 1). Locate a compatible replacement drive. While many different drive models are available online, each model only works with a small range of notebook computers. Many retailers include a full list of compatible notebook models on product description pages, and some retailers offer product searches targeted at your specific Acer model number.
- 2). Shut down the Acer laptop, and unplug the power cable. Slide the locking lever on the underside of the case, then remove the battery from the casing.
- 3). Remove any screws holding the optical drive in place using your screwdriver. The exact location and number of the screws varies by Acer model, but you can usually find them on the underside of the computer, near the side containing the optical drive and sunk more into the casing than other casing screws.
- 4). Carefully slide the optical drive out of the slot. If the drive is encased in a mounting bracket, remove the bracket and transfer it to the new drive. You may need a small jeweler's screwdriver to remove the bracket.
- 5). Slide the new drive in place. Press firmly to ensure a proper connection, but do not use excessive force. Replace the screw to hold the new drive in place.
- 6). Replace the battery and power cord, and power the notebook on.
- 7). Install new drivers for the optical drive. Some drives will function correctly without new drivers, as the older drivers can adequately interface with the new hardware. If the new drive contains new features, it will require new driver software before these features become available. Install drivers from an included installation disk, or download them from the manufacturer's website.
