How to Back Up an External Firewall

    • 1). Launch your Internet browser on the PC. Type the appropriate IP address for your router's brand in the address bar. For Netgear and D-Link, type 192.168.0.1; for Linksys, type 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1; for Belkin, type 192.168.2.1; and for Trendnet, type 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1. Press "Enter" to access the router's web-based interface. If your router's brand is not listed here, navigate to the TechSpot website to see other possible router IP addresses (see Resources).

    • 2). Log in to the router by typing in the appropriate username and password. For Netgear, type "admin" and "password"; for Linksys, D-Link and Trendnet, type "admin" and "admin"; Belkin may not require login credentials. Press "Enter" to go to the router's main administration menu. Navigate to the Lost In Technology website to see other possible usernames and passwords (see Resources).

    • 3). Click on the tab or link labeled "Backup." Use the default name or type in another name to identify the router setting's backup file, such as "Netgear Backup" or "Linksys Backup."

    • 4). Click on the folders and drive letters in the dialog box to find a location that will store the backup on the hard drive. As an example, choose the "C" drive.

    • 5). Click "Save" and wait for the web-based interface to compile and save the router's settings, including those of the firewall, to the PC.
