How to Make a Dell Laptop Wireless

    Setting up your wireless card

    • 1). Order a wireless internet card online or purchase one from the store. As of 2009, most newer wireless cards come in the PCMCIA II (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) format. PCMCIA II was originally designed for additional storage but has been adapted for wireless internet. External USB Wi-Fi solutions exist too. 802.11g is the common standard for Wi-Fi although the 802.11n protocol has been approved and may take over in the future.

    • 2). Remove the wireless internet card from its packaging and locate the installation CD.

    • 3). Place the CD in to your Dell laptop and run the installation procedures on the disk.

    • 4). Your laptop's instructional manual should tell you where to locate the wireless internet card expansion slot. Open the expansion slot and plug in your internet card. Once your card has been plugged in, you should see a "new hardware detected" window pop open. Select your hardware from the list and your wireless internet card is now active.

    • 5). Reboot your Dell laptop.
