How to Insert Replacement Windows

    • 1). Use your hammer and pry bar to gently remove the narrow piece of "stop-trim," which borders the window opening, on the side facing into the room. Don't break the trim; you'll need to re-install it.

    • 2). Pull the bottom window sash straight out. Use your hammer and pry bar to remove the narrow vertical divider strip that's in front of the top sash. Pull the top sash out. Leave the exterior stop trim in place.

    • 3). With your razor knife, cut several strips of insulation as wide as the window unit. Set one piece of the insulation strip on the window sill, and set the bottom of the window on top of the insulation.

    • 4). Push the window up and into the opening, tucking pieces of insulation in around it. Push it in entirely, letting it come to rest against the exterior stop trim.

    • 5). Hold your level alongside the unit, and tap shims between the unit and the frame of the opening to get it straight. Move the level to a horizontal position on the window, and continue shimming until it's level.

    • 6). With your screw gun, drive long mounting screws through the sides of the window unit, using the provided screw holes, to affix it to the frame.

    • 7). Re-install the interior stop trim around the new unit with your trim nailer, trapping it in place. Caulk all around the interior and exterior borders of the window.
