How to Use a Ball Joint Tool

    • 1). Center the ball joint tool onto the ball joint. The teeth of the fork should rest on either side of the ball joint where the ball joint meets the control arm or steering knuckle (depending on which ball joint you are working on).

    • 2). Hit the end of the tool with a hammer. You must hit the tool very hard to separate most ball joints from their connection to the control arm and knuckle.

    • 3). Pry up on the tool. Once the tool is wedged deep into the joint, a combination of hitting the end of the tool and prying up on the joint will remove the ball joint from the rest of the suspension.
