How to Expand an HFS File System
- 1). Download GParted Live, a freeware program for resizing hard disk partitions. Burn the program onto a CD or USB thumb drive.
- 2). Open "Disk Utility" and select the Mac OS X partition you want to expand. Hold down the "Option" key and click "File" on the menu bar. Select the "Disable Journaling" option.
- 3). Restart the computer with the CD or USB drive plugged into the computer. Press "F12" until the boot option screen appears. Select the device or drive that contains GParted to boot the program.
- 4). Choose the language and resolution for the program and press "Enter." At the main menu, select the HFS partition you want expanded and click on "Resize/Move." Use the sliders to resize the partition as desired, and then click "Resize/Move" when finished.
- 5). Click the "Apply" button to finalize all changes that you made. Wait for the program to expand the partition to the size you requested. When the operation is complete, you should see "All Operations Successfully Completed." Double-click on the "Exit" icon and then select "Restart" to restart the computer. You will be prompted to remove the CD or USB drive.
- 6). Boot back into Mac OS X and open "Disk Utility." Click on the partition and click the green "Hard Drive" button at the top of the window to re-enable "Journaling."
