How to Install Windows XP to Replace Windows 98

    Prepare computer

    • 1). Backup all files you wish to keep before upgrading.

    • 2). Flash your BIOS. Visit your motherboard manufacturer's website or your computer manufacturer's website to view the latest BIOS downloads. Follow the instructions provided with the download to flash your BIOS. For most updates, you will need a formatted floppy disk.

    • 3). Turn off the Power Management option in Windows 98. Go to "Start," select "Settings," choose "Control Panel" and double click "Power Management." Choose the "Power Scheme" tab and set the following options to "Never": "Turn off monitor," "Turn off hard disks" and "System Standby."

    • 4). Uninstall or disable any anti-virus software. This may prevent Windows XP from upgrading correctly.

    • 5). Check hardware and software compatibility. See the Resources section for links.

    • 6). Download any updated drivers for your hardware. Visit the hardware manufacturer's website for updated drivers.

    • 7). Exit all running programs.

    Performing the upgrade

    • 1). Insert the Windows XP Upgrade disk in your CD drive.

    • 2). Select "Install Windows XP" when the CD launches. If the menu does not appear, open the CD in Windows Explorer and select "setup.exe."

    • 3). Read the license agreement and press "F8" to continue.

    • 4). Enter your product key. This is located on your Windows XP disk packaging.

    • 5). Choose whether to convert your system to NTFS or not. If you convert, you cannot uninstall the upgrade. If you do not plan to uninstall the Windows XP upgrade, convert your drive to NTFS.

    • 6). Skip the Dynamic Update option unless you are using a high speed Internet connection. Dynamic Updates are not necessary during the upgrade process and can be done at a later date.

    • 7). Enter an administrator password for your system.

    • 8). Allow Windows XP to install.

    • 9). Enter a new username and a password.

      Wait for the installation to complete and your system to reboot. Your system will boot into Windows XP.
